NORMAN Y. MINETA JOINS BOARD OF THE MAUREEN AND MIKE MANSFIELD
FOUNDATION
WASHINGTON, D.C. Norman Y. Mineta, former U.S. secretary of commerce
and U.S. secretary of transportation, has joined the Maureen and
Mike Mansfield Foundation’s board of directors. The Mansfield
Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes understanding
and cooperation in U.S.-Asia relations through policy exchanges,
U.S.-Asia dialogues, research and education.
Secretary Mineta, currently vice chairman of Hill & Knowlton, was appointed
U.S. secretary of transportation by President George W. Bush in 2001, serving
until July 7, 2006?the longest serving transportation secretary in the department’s
history. Previously, he was appointed U.S. secretary of commerce by President
Bill Clinton. From 1975 to 1995, Mineta represented the Silicon Valley area
of his home state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives, and he
also served as vice president of Lockheed Martin and mayor of San Jose, California.
“It is an enormous honor to have Norman Mineta on the Mansfield Foundation
board,” said L. Gordon Flake, Mansfield Foundation executive director. “Secretary
Mineta’s long career of public service is distinguished with many ‘firsts’:
first Asian American mayor of a major U.S. city (San Jose, Calif.), first chair
of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, which he co-founded, first
Asian American to hold a post in a presidential cabinet as U.S. secretary of
commerce, and first Asian American to serve as U.S. secretary of transportation.
Secretary Mineta has been a true friend of the Mansfield Foundation over the
years, nominating several participants for the Mansfield Fellowship Program.
We look forward to having the benefit of his expertise, leadership and wisdom
on the Foundation board.”
