On April 16, 2003, the Mansfield Foundation and the Global
Forum of Japan co-sponsored a daylong U.S.-Japan dialogue
on Entrepreneurship in Asia. The program, which was held at the
International House of Japan in Tokyo, convened two panels of
leading entrepreneurship experts to discuss the state of new
enterprise development in China, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.
Their discussion focused on the policies that help or hinder
new business creation. In preparation for the dialogue, the Foundation
published a compendium report in CD-ROM format. The report, which
is entitled Entrepreneurship in Asia: Playbook for Prosperity,
included the papers presented at a three-day Foundation-sponsored
workshop in Hong Kong in July 2002, during which nine entrepreneurship
experts explored new business creation in Asia.
The following is a complete list of the chapters
on the CD-ROM.
Entrepreneurship in Asia: Expert Workshop
July 8-10, 2002
Hong Kong
This three-day program was designed to examine the current state
and future directions of entrepreneurial activities in Asia with
a particular focus on government policies and best practices that
nurture the development and success of entrepreneurs and small
and medium enterprises (SMEs). The program, which took place in
Hong Kong, consisted of a two-day expert workshop for entrepreneurs,
business executives and government officials, and site visits to
Hong Kong businesses. At the expert workshop, facilitated by Dr.
Erik Pages of the National Commission on Entrepreneurship, participants
from Hong Kong, PRC, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia,
Thailand and Vietnam explored policy factors affecting entrepreneurial
activity in their respective economies. Following the expert workshop,
participants visited local businesses and met with Hong Kong business
and government leaders.
