  • At Ministry of Health and Welfare, began regulatory research comparing drug dosing in Japan and the U.S.

  • Discussed Drug regulatory topics with representatives of the Tokyo office of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturer's Association and also at the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturer's Association.

  • Participated in MHW discussions at the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) meeting in Tokyo. Served as MHLW liaison on a number of topics.

  • Gave presentations and lectures to enhance Japanese colleagues' understanding of FDA guidelines, dissolution testing and regulatory topics.

  • Interviewed by Yakuji Nippo, a Japanese Pharmaceutical Newspaper. Also had a series of 5 articles published in this newspaper related to pharmaceutical topics.

Developed an understanding of the drug approval process in Japan, drugs approved for marketing in Japan, drug dispensing processes and recommended doses in comparison to the U.S.

Current U.S. Government Assignments and Activities

Director, Division of Pharmaceutical Evaluation in the Office of Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmaceutics. Serves as a focal point in the Center for Drug Evaluationand Research (CDER of FDA for Japan drug related issues. Involvements with Fellows coming to CDER from MHLW in Japan, for 6 month training assignments as well as other visitors from MHLW.

  • Participated in JCAB meetings to coordinate transportation issues during G-8 Summit in Okinawa.

  • Traveled with other members of JCAB to the Informal Pacific ATC Coordinating Group meetings in Hawaii. Helped prepare briefing papers on new issues for the meetings.

  • Attended a two-day aviation symposium with prominent members of Japan's aviation community.

  • Served as an intern in the office of Diet member Shinya Izumi.

Observed and analyzed Japan's aviation policy-making process, including air traffic control technology and capacity. Participate in the implementation of Japan's satellite navigation deployment, and examine Japan's air traffic leadership role in East Asia.

  • Analyzed documents in preparation for the G-8 Summit; worked with the Japanese team formulating responses and negotiation strategies on issues related to nuclear safety.

  • Investigated issues for the G-7 Nuclear Safety Working Group.

  • Learned about how MOFA addresses complex international issues by translating documents for the Director General.

Gained an in-depth understanding of Japan's policies related to the protection of military critical and dual-use technology.
