Mary-Jane Atwater serves as director of communications
for the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, a position
she has held since 1996. Mary-Jane directs the Foundation’s
communications and outreach strategies and activities.
Her responsibilities include strategic communications planning
and consultation, media relations, editorial development,
oversight of the Foundation’s website, and production
management. Ms. Atwater is also president of Atwater Communications,
a public relations, marketing and communications firm operating
as a virtual agency. Since founding the company, Mary-Jane
has helped nonprofit organizations, associations, local
governments and businesses solve a wide range of communications
challenges. She specializes in social marketing, campaign
development, public education, event and meeting management,
market research, collateral materials development and writing/editing.
Prior to launching Atwater Communications, Mary-Jane directed
public relations and communications accounts at Mitchell
Petersen, Inc., where she developed environmental public
information campaigns, managed special events and conducted
market research. Earlier in her career, she was a rehabilitation
counselor for drug abusers and offenders.
Mary-Jane has more than 22 years experience in public
relations and marketing. She holds an M.B.A in marketing
and market research and an M.A. in Education, both from
The George Washington University, and a B.A. cum laude
from Connecticut College. She is a member of the Public
Relations Society of America and served as 2004 chair of
the Independent Public Relations Alliance. She is a frequent
speaker on public relations topics at regional and national
conferences.
